breakfast spell, n. any spell (usually with a duration that extends until the caster goes to sleep, or for 24 hours) that a magic-user routinely casts upon rising in the morning; such spells are typically of a type that protects the caster or augments his power, and thus is of the type that the caster would rather not do without. [BAL]

Addendum: So named, obviously, because the caster notionally casts them at breakfast time. [BAL] Addendum #2: "Breakfast Spell" is actually a GURPS-ism from our group. It initially denoted a specific spell which was known at sufficiently high skill to be maintainable for free. Thus, while "Missile Shield" has a duration of 1 minute, a sufficiently skilled mage could "renew" it for free every 60 seconds as long as he remained conscious. Ex: "Athkamakar got his levitate spell to skill-25. He can now carry five people as a breakfast spell. The party sold their horses." [VK]
