lycanthropy, lycanthrope, n. 1. in general usage, the delusion that one has become a wolf. 2. in occult folklore, a condition, disease, or curse that causes an individual to take on a wolf's form, or to display wolf-like characteristics, either voluntarily or involuntarily; werewolfism; from Greek lykanthropos "werewolf" (lykos "wolf" + anthropos "man"); see berserker. 3. in gamerese, a disease, disad or special ability that allows a character to shapeshift or morph into a specific animal, or to take on specific characteristics and abilities of that animal, often but not necessarily a wolf. Examples include werewolf, werebear, werefox, werebat, werecat, wererat, weredinosaur and selkie. Also shapeshifter, skinchanger, animal powers. 4. Sometimes, animals which can assume human form, such as wolfweres (lupus in Werewolf: The Apocalypse), or Japanese kitsune and pompoko spirits. [GJ1]

Addendum#2: One can add the prefix "were-" to anything, to indicate a human capable of transforming into that thing. Some people will use "-were" as a suffix, to indicate an animal that can become human, as in wolfwere. [GJ1]
